Ager Lane Flower Farm + Event Space is a proudly Black and Queer woman-owned business located on 18 acres in beautiful Big Bras d’Or, Nova Scotia. With sweeping views of the Bras d’Or Lakes and a backdrop of Kelly’s Mountain, our property is both a working flower farm and a vibrant outdoor event venue. Now entering our third flower-farming season and second full wedding season—with a fully booked calendar—we are excited to welcome a full-time summer staff member to our team. Ager Lane is a dynamic agri-tourism business with many components, this position will work in all of them giving the successful applicant a dynamic and honest experience of modern day small business ownership.
Employment Overview
9 week position partially funded by the Canada Summer Jobs program. Successful applicant must be under 30 years old and eligible to work in Canada.
Start date: June 29. End Date: August 28nd
30 hours a week, flexible schedule available (ex. four 8 hour days, five 6 hour days). Saturdays required.
$21 per hour
Located on site in Big Bras d’Or, Cape Breton Island
Position Overview
The Farm Hand and Event Person will support day-to-day flower farming activities, as well as assist with event setup and takedown for weddings and community gatherings. This role offers the unique opportunity to experience a full growing season—from seed starting to harvest—while also gaining experience in event operations. Flower farming is rewarding but physically demanding, and we value resilience, a willingness to learn, and a positive attitude. Previous farming or gardening experience is an asset but not required.
Key Responsibilities
Flower Farm Duties
-Start seeds and up-pot seedlings in the grow room and greenhouse.
-Transplant seedlings and direct-sow seeds into 18 raised beds and surrounding planting areas.
-Weed, water, stake, net, and maintain plants throughout the growing season.
-Perform outdoor work in varying weather conditions, using appropriate sun and insect protection.
-Use basic farm tools such as clippers, shovels, wheelbarrows, buckets, and ladders.
-Optional/Trainable: use of ride-on lawn mower for moving materials.
-Additional responsibilities as they arise
Event Support Duties
-Assist with wedding and event setup and takedown, including moving folding tables and chairs, installing simple décor, and hanging lights.
-Greet and assist couples, their families, and vendors arriving for event setup or site tours.
-Help direct parking and provide general onsite support during event days.
-Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming event space.
-Additional responsibilities as they arise including some admin work such as grant writing during inclement weather.
Qualifications & Skills
-Able to work both independently and collaboratively.
-Strong communication and customer service skills, or willingness to learn.
-Comfortable with physical labour (accessibility tools such as kneelers, benches, and ergonomic equipment will be provided as needed).
-Reliability and professionalism when interacting with guests and vendors.
-A reliable vehicle or ability to arrange transportation (no public transit available to the farm).
-Availability to work Saturdays during the wedding season
